Expara launched Expara Ventures III (“EV3”), a Southeast Asia (“SEA”) regional, early-stage venture capital fund. The partners running the fund bring a rich combination of venture capital, angel investment, entrepreneurial and deep technology industry experience. Members of the management team have been involved in VC investment in Singapore since 2000; have extensive technology industry background and an unparalleled network in Asia, Europe and the US. EV3’s unique strategy is to make regional, early-stage investments (from seed stage to Series A) in highly scalable companies across SEA. EV3 will have an affiliated accellerator in each geography to support our companies in the seed stage.
Fund Manager has launched 3 VC funds in Singapore since 2007, has invested in 37 companies. Return from Fund I (2007-2011) is currently 5.39x; 43% IRR. Manager raised S$63MM in VC funds and startup investments since 2007.
Seed stage investment in SEA has increased exponentially over the last several years, driven from Singapore, where Government initiatives to catalyze the enterprise ecosystem have begun to yield extensive high-quality deal-flow. Increasing investment has driven an influx of entrepreneurial talent into SEA from centers of excellence around the world. Nascent enterprise ecosystems have begun to develop in neighboring countries, notably Thailand and Malaysia. Real exit markets have begun to develop, as evidenced by more than S$400MM in exits in 2013.
EV3 is the lead investor, targeting investments up to a maximum of S$3MM per company across two rounds of investment, from seed stage to Series A. We may also co-invest in some rounds in partnership with our LPs, strategic partners and high-value-added co-investors. To mitigate risk and improve visibility, we require a seat on the portfolio company’s Board of Directors. We continuously work with portfolio companies to optimize their financial and business strategies and strive to maintain the role of lead investor as the company moves through subsequent rounds of funding. We leverage our global network and Advisory Board for pre-investment support and portfolio company acceleration, and expect to exit the majority of our investments through strategic acquisitions.
